Happy 2018 from One Human Race!

This year we're making some exciting changes to our One Human Race program.

First, we're condensing our One Human Race Series into a one-day workshop, so if the requirement of attending three Saturdays in a row has kept you from participating, this is your year.

Second, we're planning more Austin Story events. The Austin Story is a one-evening presentation about the history of racism in Austin. Have you ever wondered how the racial divisions we see in our city today came to be? Attend The Austin Story and find out.

Third, we'll be taking One Human Race on the road to other Texas cities. We're looking forward to spending time with communities outside Austin and planting the seeds of racial reconciliation.

Specific dates will be added to our calendar as they are confirmed. We hope to see you in 2018!

The One Human Race Series is now open for September registration. We have recently completed the July series and want to have the opportunity for early birds to register. We now our recent and past participants will be spreading the word. Reserve your seat. Registration is limited to the first 60 responses.

April Shower Brings May Flowers

It's hard to believe that we are already in the second quarter of 2016. The ATX has experienced an abundant amount of rain and Lake Travis as of April 14, 2016 is full. You may be wondering what that means in reference to the One Human Race Series? It means that we have experienced a full year already in 2016 and are looking forward to the upcoming sessions.

We encourage you to register for series as soon as they open. You can subscribe to this blog so you will receive an email notification when we open registrations. This is how we can let you know that it's time to register. We do limit the size of each series so we have no more than 6 break out groups with about eight people per group. We have an excellent team of volunteers to help facilitate and assist with creating an open, safe, and productive environment so that everyone can learn and participate in conversations about race.

I was asked some interesting questions with Sam Wollard and Kelli Nichols of Wollard Nichols and Associates (WNA) that made me think about why the One Human Race Initiative are so important to a meaningful, transforming dialogue about race...

You’re a housing and real estate person. How did you get engaged in facilitating conversations about race?
It wasn’t directly connected to my real estate and lending; it was through the church side of my life. I was asked to attend a workshop by a friend at church several years ago. That’s how I became aware of the PBS series “Race: The Power of An Illusion” and some other organizations trying to facilitate a conversation about race. At work, I really never made the connection that we needed to be having the same kinds of conversations until

U BE the Change

You may be wondering what you can do to make a change in our nation's race issues. Change can seem impossible in light of the entrenched nature of American racism and the recent examples of race-based police brutality. Nevertheless, there is hope. You can create a safe place in your community to learn and talk about these issues by hosting a workshop based on the PBS series "Race: The Power of an Illusion," which outlines the history of the concept of race in our society. By seriously examining the social concept of race, you can help others  embrace our unity as one human race.
